Set Fishing Reel Drag Before the Cast

A simple drag-setting process that protects line and keeps pressure on a fish.

TackleSonar Editorial

Set it before fishing

Drag should release line smoothly under firm pressure. Start looser when uncertain and tighten in small steps rather than locking the spool.

Use the line as the limit

A common starting range is roughly one-third of the line’s tested strength, adjusted for knots, leader strength, rod action, cover, and species. Use a scale when accuracy matters.

Test through the guides

Pull from beyond the rod tip so the rod and guides load as they will during a fight. Never wrap braid around bare hands; it can cut skin.

Based on Take Me Fishing’s drag-setting guidance.
